Congratulations, President-elect Barack Obama!

A proud, new chapter in American history has begun, and while I’ll leave all the punditry to others more qualified, I do want to say that I’ve yet to hear anybody actually say our country is shifting to the left. It’s been about this issue or that, this personality or that, age, race, the economy, blah, blah, blah, blah.

But nobody has actually come out and said that Barack Obama was elected, because the country is moving to the left.

And this gives me the opportunity to link once again to Peter Lurie’s brilliant 2003 essay, ” Why the Web Will Win the Culture Wars for the Left: Deconstructing Hyperlinks

Lurie paints a fascinating picture of a world where linking via the Web to source material undercuts hierarchy and is actually the postmodern application called “deconstructionism.” By its nature — that of associated links — the Web is taking us leftward, whether we like it or not. I think it’s a terrific piece of reasoning, and I recommend you read it, especially in light of what happened last night.

I view it also as a challenge to our new President, for if he gets into office and tries to take us back to conventional liberalism, he will have missed what’s really taking place. He’s promised a new direction; let’s see what happens.
