A new business developing right before our eyes (thanks, Britney)

These kinds of moments are always fun, when you can actually see a new enterprise forming. It’s happened a few times in my life, and it always leads me to wish that I could just drop everything I’m doing and go down its path.

Welcome to the age of the Media 2.0 master, the person who, for a significant fee, will manage your online persona. That’s right. You’ve got a brand that you want to control, but there’s those nasty fans or customers that might get in the way. Facebook. MySpace. Twitter. Comments. Discussion boards. Who’s going to watch all that for you?

According to Michael Arrington at TechCrunch, Britney Spears advertised this weekend on a private Harvard University job board for just such a person.

Think this is a fluke? Mark my words, this will become an industry in the years to come as people realize the value of their personal brand. There will be books on how to do it (Seth Godin wrote the first “Get what you deserve” — out of print), and companies built to create and manage best practices for personal branding and maintaining that brand.

Another BTW, my daughter introduced me to Spears’ latest album, Circus. I hate to say this, but I like it, especially Unusual You.
